MANCHESTER, NH —It was a family reunion of sorts when former Fire Chief Dan Goonan arrived at the Ward 10 polling place (Parker Varney School) and was “reunited” with his sister Ginger Goonan this afternoon.

Ginger had been doing her duty with a DAN GOONAN — ALDERMAN AT LARGE SIGN at Ward 10, though she visited other wards, too.

This is the first political campaign for Chief Goonan, and running at large is a strenuous undertaking. He has proved equal to the task.

Sources say that it’s a tight three way-race between Goonan, Planning Board Chair June Trisciani and incumbent Joe Kelly Levasseur for the two alderman at large spots on the Board, though Levasseur may find himself defeated after five straight terms.

No one is counting out incumbent Danny O’Neil, who has been alderman at large since the office was created. Casting a ballot for O’Neil seemingly is part of some voters genetic makeup. One doesn’t hold an office for 24 straight years without being popular.

Danny O’Neil first won the newly created office of alderman at large in 1997. In the period of 1997 to 2021, only four men — O’Neil, Rich Girard, Mike Lopez and Joe Kelly Levasseur — have served in the post.

The smart money is on Dan Goonan to win one of the seats this election. There is also a lot of speculation that the strong campaign waged by June Trisciani may pay off and put her on the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.

The election of either Goonan or Trisciani likely will revolutionize the Board, as both are strong personalities with proven managerial skills who have reputations for integrity and independence. If both should win, it likely would be the start of a new era in Queen City politics.
